Almost Autumn Blanket

The weather is definitely beginning to change now. It’s been an uncharacteristically long and hot summer in England this year, but the air is beginning to cool now. I enjoy this time of year when the season changes and I’m looking forward to Autumn. It’s been a busy year and I wanted a calming project to work on throughout September.

The Almost Autumn blanket is the result. It’s a gentle, relaxing make with only one square to learn. The pattern looks wordy, but once you have made the first square you probably won’t need to refer to it again. The squares are crocheted together as you go. No sewing required! The join is fairly simple, but rather than trying to explain it in pictures, Laurelin of Snufflebean Yarn has made a video to show you how to do it. A link below allows you to hop over to her YouTube channel after you’ve made your first square.

If you would like to make one, here is what I am using:

Sirdar Hayfield Bonus Dk

3 x Starling

2 x Fields of Gold

1 each Stone Marl, Silver Mist, Pumpkin, Burnt Orange and Tea Rose.

Snufflebean yarn has a pack in her shop here.

4.5mm hook

The finished size will be approx. 100cm x 155cm.

This would be a great stashbuster too. Each square requires about 10g of dk yarn. Quantities will vary for other weights of yarn. If you are using a different weight of yarn, I recommend going up half a hook size. So for Aran yarn I would use a 5.5mm hook.

Here is my layout for the squares. Start by making the square in the bottom left hand corner in colour A - Starling. Work across and up from there. The video will show you how to join the squares and construct the blanket.

For my demonstration square below I have used Silver Mist. This is because it is easier to see the stitches in a solid colour rather than the flecked Starling.

A - Starling

B - Tea Rose

C - Burnt Orange

D - Pumpkin

E - Fields of Gold

F - Stone Marl

G - Silver Mist

Once you have made your first square, pop over to see Laurelin on her YouTube channel and she will show you how to join squares and finish your blanket with a neat border. Don’t worry if you are struggling a bit with the written pattern, Laurelin will explain how to make the first square too.
